Plays & Everything Theatre

I’m currently finishing up a full length play, which means, if it’s staged, the run time will be around two hours – with an interval.

It’s a modern tragedy exploring the tension between duty, artistic ambition, brotherhood, and betrayal. All against the backdrop of an unnamed war. Like most of my writing, it’s heavy in symbolism. I can’t help it, it just happens. There are roses, a military general, a stern mother, a capitalist, death, and biblical names.

It’s self-indulgent in the sense that the story took me wherever it wanted to go. A few rewrites later, and it became a tragedy. Mary is still sad, but she won’t tell you about it.

A rough concept drawing for the staging of Within These Walls. Sketched at early development. This is how I imagined the staging. It’s a short play where everything happens in one setting. The positioning of the props is arbitrary. The most important element, of course, are the antlers, and their dominance over the room.

For the symbolism in Within These Walls, I was mostly inspired by the Finnish indie film He Ovat Paenneet (They Have Escaped) from 2014. I was intrigued by the animalistic elements used to portray their loss of innocence. The film itself is pretty abrasive, but the symbolism employed is direct and satisfyingly menacing. From this, the idea of using reindeer antlers was solidified.
